USA-flag 420x470California has passed a law requiring public schools in the state to allow transgender students to determine which bathrooms they use and which sporting teams they join on the basis of their gender identity rather than biological sex.

Some schools in the United States already have similar policies, but this is the first example of such legislation at a state level.

The bill passed after a lively debate in the state Senate, with some politicians claiming the law breached other students rights to privacy and to be free from discomfort.

The law follows a number of legal challenges against discrimination towards transgender students by public schools in California.
