UK Christian leader abused family

The ex-wife of Britain’s most outspoken homophobic Christian has revealed she endured violence and coercive sex, while their children were given extreme punishments.

Caroline Green endured a 26-year marriage to Christian Voice leader Stephen Green until 2006, which she told the Daily Mail newspaper was like “living in a cult”.

In 1997 Green moved his wife and four children into a caravan on a small farm in Wales.

“He told us the Bible decreed we should work the land … He used the kids as child labour,” Caroline Green told the paper.

‘He beat our middle son with a belt, in front of his best friend … My eldest son was hit with a broomstick and kicked on the back of his legs.”

“On one occasion Stephen beat him so hard with a piece of wood that we thought he might have broken his arm.”

When the Greens’ youngest son left a heater on in the home, she said his father confiscated it for two years — forcing them to sleep in freezing conditions.

Green said she had endured years of coercive sex, but it was when Stephen began to beat her that she decided to leave.

“He believed there was no such thing as marital rape and for years I’d been reluctant to have sex with him, but he said it was my duty and was angry if I refused him … But the beating was the last straw. It convinced me I had to divorce him.”
