Vamp it up in volleys this Valentines

Start scouring the op shops because it’s time to put your best (high-heeled) foot forward and get involved with the Frontrunner-hosted Little Black Dress Run on Saturday February 14.

The yearly event which raises much-needed funds for children with HIV by getting people to run while unsuitably attired in chic black dresses is now in its fifth year and looking to boost numbers to unprecedented levels, said organiser Denver Duffer.

We are helping kids with HIV so the more success had, the better. Last year was our most successful year ever and we’re building on that momentum.

All are welcome. We’re kid and dog-friendly too, he said.

We do not encourage anyone to run in heels. There’s always the one who tries, but nothing looks more tragic than a limping dragster on a broken heel. For safety’s sake, wear your joggers.

Last year’s event saw 100 Frontrunners and supporters take part in the 5km run around Centennial Park. The event contributed $9000 to Camp Goodtime, a non-government-supported charity which takes children and families affected by HIV out on regular camps.

Kids with HIV cannot yet live a kid’s life, Duffer said as a reminder of the day’s real importance.

Medication issues aside, they can’t easily come out to their friends or schoolmates as there is a lot of juvenile ignorance and prejudice out there.

We used to give to another well-known group but found out they also had a few big time corporate donations. We are a smallish group that feels great about coming together for this run because our dollars raised have an impact on the organisation selected and don’t just get lost in a larger budget.

Anyone can do their part to assist the project, whether they’re a runner or not, Duffer assured. He encouraged anyone unable to run or walk to help spread the word, by adding the Little Black Dress Run event to their Facebook page or by making a direct cash donation to the Randwick Children’s Hospital.

Prize donations are also being sought to provide the fastest runner, best dressed and saddest handbag with some encouragement for their efforts.

  1. Oops — also the event is 4K and participants should arrive about 8.45am as parking will be difficult and last minute make-up always takes much longer than expected!

  2. A small error – this in fact is the 8th year of LBD running in Sydney, not 5th.

It’s always fun to be part of – just turn up on the day and bring your sponsor sheet and wear a fabulous black dress!
