THE first official trailer for lesbian-themed drama Carol was released earlier this week, and it has already generated social media buzz.

The teaser shows a montage of short scenes depicting the forbidden 1950s romance between Carol (Blanchett), a Manhattan socialite, and Therese (Mara), a department store clerk.

Directed by Todd Haynes, the film is based from the 1952 novel The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith. In an interview with The Guardian, Highsmith revealed she has been in many relationships with women, saying “more times than rats have orgasms”.

Carol is slated for a Australian cinematic release in December.
