The Freezone volleyballers traded in their red vests for some red Santa hats last Saturday night as the group celebrated Christmas and handed out awards to some stunning players.

The annual event garnered its biggest turn-out in years, said Freezone president Wally Salinger, who estimated that around 80 people joined the fun at the Pyrmont Bridge Hotel.

It was the biggest night of that sort that we’ve had, ever, and given the time of year with everybody else’s Christmas parties going on, it’s always good to see that we can get that sort of turn-out.
The focus wasn’t just on having fun though, but was also about recognising some of the players who were handed awards for their efforts throughout the year.

The night was also an opportunity for the sports men and women to get together and bond over non-sports related points as well -” an experience which Salinger said will have an impact on the quality of teamwork in the coming year.

We were going to put on a whole lot of shows, but then we thought, volleyballers don’t get a chance to talk to each other very often. So we did very little, but you couldn’t get people to shut up, even as the speeches were going, so it was great.

At a committee level, we believe so strongly in the need for socialising that we actually have a social coordinator, who will hopefully be putting on a few more things next year. We’re possibly thinking of having a get-together in January to go play some beach volleyball and maybe get the Frontrunners and some of the swimmers involved.

Now on hiatus, the Freezoners will have to wait to put their teamwork into action. Play resumes in January and continues through the year, with Freezone once again vowing to get to all the local tournaments they can.
