31 flavours of right

Ilan Werbeloff 420x470We all look for something different in the men we choose to date, hook-up with or just chat to and it’s not always the same every time. Much like sampling the flavours of ice cream, there are so many different options to choose from.

So how do we decide what we are looking for and how do we convince them that we are is who they are looking for? That’s the challenge, isn’t it? Well that’s one of them. The next challenge is, of course, do you want a single cone, a double cone or even a whole cup?

Whether you are looking for Mr Right or Mr Tonight there are many different types to choose from. You may be in the mood for Mr Might with bulging muscles, or Mr Slight with the slender hips. Perhaps you look for Mr Height, perhaps Mr Tight… (rhyming can be so much fun). Either way we know our community comprises a wide range of men who come from different ethnicities, cultural backgrounds and more. And even within that we have men who have a range of body types, sexual preferences and identities.

Each difference in our community is cause for celebration as it adds to the diversity that makes the GLBTI community so unique. So what’s your flavour?

Once you know which flavour you’re in the mood for, how do you attract those people specifically? Well there’s two ways of doing this, one way is to actively filter out what you don’t want. Sometimes this can be easy to do online, particularly for things like body types, sexual preferences and cultural background. However this can sometimes be hurtful and upsetting to those on the receiving end of your active filtering and it may result in you unintentionally getting filtered out yourself by people who you are attracted to. Be careful of the language you use, at all times.

The second way of attracting the people you want is not so much about filtering out what you don’t want, but rather exhibiting the traits that would be desirable to the people you do want. Similar to how a company focuses on branding, it’s important to think about how you portray yourself and how it makes people feel about you. What message are you sending out towards the people you want to attract? Whilst this applies to online settings it also works really well in a bar or any other real world setting.

Not everyone is going to be your type, and as we all know our tastes fluctuate over time. This means there’s a chance that eventually you may pick a flavour you have never tried before – and you might like it. So it is worth considering what message you choose to send about yourself to the community.
