Getting to Zero

Getting to Zero

You will be pleased to know that planning is well underway for World AIDS Day 2012 and we have some exciting things organised.

World AIDS Day is on December 1 and is a day set aside internationally to recognise and show support for people living with HIV. The day is an opportunity for us to raise awareness about HIV and raise funds to support those living with the infection.

This year we have chosen to adopt the UN theme Getting to Zero. For us, this means getting to zero stigma and discrimination for people living with HIV, zero new transmissions, and zero AIDS related deaths. We hope you can help us achieve this.

So, we are looking for a team of about 60 people to help us storm the streets of Melbourne’s CBD on December 1 and distribute more than 40,000 red ribbons. We don’t do things by halves so when we say paint the town red, we mean it.

How are we going to get rid of so many ribbons? Well, that’s where we need your help. We are looking for excited and enthusiastic volunteers who can give two hours of their time on Saturday, December 1. Volunteers will be provided with ribbons that we are giving away for free.

Whilst we always like a donation, our focus is on raising awareness, not funds. We will also be running some training sessions in the weeks leading up to World AIDS Day to give you some tips and tricks to help promote the day and what to do on the day itself.

The street appeal is a fun and friendly way to get involved and lend a helping hand, if you think you or your friends might be interested in pitching in, please send an email to [email protected] with your name, contact details.

We also have a World AIDS Day Facebook page to help you keep on top of our plans and activities on the day. There are also a number of events on the page so make sure you check them out too! But it’s not just about us – we want to hear about you! If you have volunteered on a past World AIDS Day tell us what it was like. If you have any photos post them (I know we will be). Just go to facebook.com/#!/WADVictoria and say hi.

We look forward to hearing from you and getting you on board for World AIDS Day 2012. Let’s raise awareness and show how together we can support Getting to Zero.
