Lots of fruity fun

Fresh Fruits is a youth-run group in Lismore which provides support and a social network for same-sex attracted and transgendered teens.

Fresh Fruits meets the first and second Tuesday of the month. On September 6 and 20, the group meets at the Tropical Fruits clubhouse — the Fruitbowl — from 5.30-7.30pm. LGBT people under 25 can contact 02 6622 6440 for more information.

Many LGBT community groups in the Northern Rivers support Fresh Fruits. One way ACON can help is by providing transport so if you need a lift getting to or back home from the Fresh Fruits group, call Tobin on 02 6622 1555. The group gets involved in a wide range of fun and fruity activities!

Other ways we can support our LGBT young people is to get involved in Wear It Purple day on Friday, September 2. Wear It Purple started in 2010 as a way of visibly supporting LGBT young people who were facing homophobic bullying.

On Wear it Purple 2011, people everywhere are asked to wear purple to school, university, work, or other public venues to help raise awareness of homophobic bullying. Look sexy in purple while supporting a great cause! For more information, visit www.wearitpurple.org

HIV positive community members are welcome to attend the Luncheon Club which meets fortnightly for a scrumptious homecooked lunch from noon in gorgeous Brunswick Heads. It’s a delightfully social afternoon with plenty of laughs.

For more information and location, call 02 6622 1555 or 1800 633 637.

ACON Northern Rivers provides a short to medium-term sensitive and relevant face-to-face and telephone community counselling service. Counselling is tailored for people living with/or affected by HIV/AIDS and for members of the LGBT communities and is available Tuesdays from 9am-9pm and Wednesdays from 10am- -5pm.

For confidential assessment and an appointment, call 02 6622 1555.
