All happening in the bush

Country life can offer a range of benefits when compared to a cosmopolitan existence. It’s certainly a cleaner greener lifestyle and a more laidback pace. However, it’s not always, nor does it have to be, sleepy all the time.

News travels fast in the country. So when I heard of a new dance party in Ballarat, I had to go and check it out for myself. Last month I made the trip to Ballarat for what turned out to be a tremendous night of performers, acts and entertainment with some great music and a bunch of fun and friendly people.

The organisers have named the dances Dorothy’s Friends Nights and have already used a couple of different venues. The nights have been created specifically for the GLBTIQ community.

They provide a place where community members can come together to create networking opportunities and provide people with a safe, friendly environment in which to socialise, let loose and have fun.

Dorothy’s Friends, Ballarat’s monthly GLBTIQ community event, is held every third Friday of the month (next event Friday, January 21 9pm-4am). The parties often have a theme — this Friday it’s a summer camp theme and party dress is optional.

It’s at Haida Bar, 12 Camp St, Ballarat.  $10 entry (18+ event) with DJs Peter Gunn Vs Herz and guests along with live performances from Rusty O’Toole, Angel 5 and guests. Tickets can be pre-purchased online at www.dorothysfriends.net.au or there are limited door sales.

I was pleased to have made the trip and it was great to see that while there may not be gay precincts or gay venues in the sticks, if you bring together a family of us, we do know how to turn a venue ‘gay for a day’.
