Can you keep it up?

Can you keep it up?

Western Sydney has to be one of the most unpredictable queer communities. One column I am bemoaning the fact that GLBT events are dropping like flies, then the next they are springing back to life!

I am too old to keep it up … sorry, typo … I am too old to keep up with everything. I just need to lock myself away with Gay Adult Matchmaker, a webcam and some good silicone lube! Life would be so much easier.

I should be pleased things are looking up for the west. But if I didn’t make things all about me with some type of drama, then who would I be?

It is pleasing to report Heaven’s charity night was our biggest night ever. We raised nearly $2200 for the GLBT community in western Sydney, with all proceeds being distributed by ACON West.

We wish to extend a big thank you to all the drag queens that donated their time and provided patrons with a wonderful and varied show. Also thanks to the Sydney Star Observer and Voodoo Chocolates for donating the prizes for the raffles. Matt Vaughan from ACON West was invaluable and the night couldn’t have been done without him and his volunteers – thank you!

Pity not everything Heaven does runs so smoothly! Our new show Desperate Drag Queens is already under a black cloud with the flustered producer Gracie Lou having to postpone rehearsals as she scrambles to get hold of the missing music CD! Will the show debut as scheduled in August or will it be postponed until October? We’re all holding our breath to see how the stand off ends …

Upcoming events include Polly’s Club this Saturday night from 7pm. Their $$$Rich but Rotten$$$ show will be flamboyant without question. There is nothing more entertaining that seeing fossils like me attempting choreography on a stage that could house Noah’s Ark. God I love Pollys!

If you’re not up for a night out and prefer the great outdoors, then why not join the Blacktown Outdoors Group on July 17 for a physical event that would give me heart palpitations. If you like bush – walking that is, then go along and complete the Jerusalem Bay Track. I’ll be kind to them and likely give it a miss. I’m sure they don’t need to carry some exhausted, fat old drag queen on a stretcher for the majority of the trek.

The west also sees some new events launch this month with Kaleidescope’s premier on Friday July 30 at 9pm. Located at Hotel

Parramatta and supported by the Parramatta Lesbian Group this will be another monthly event. Their fingers are crossed the night will be a success, giving the GLBT communities of the west, another alternative to travelling into the city. I will be attending their speed dating event from 7pm in order to find Mr Right. If you’re lucky I might let you get a word in during the three-minute rotations.

Chequers returns down in the Gong! Formerly known as Chequers Night Club now known as Pure Nightclub – it will host another once a month GLBT night – Pure Pride. So come along and party with DIVA Award winners Kitty Glitter and I. The night will also feature Charisma Belle as host, and my slut of a daughter Laydee Kinmee with her mystery guest. If you want to join the VIP list for free entry before 10pm, email [email protected]

Drag Gossip: Which Westy Diva is getting too big for her boots after the departure of the youngest member in March? Am I a fool for paying her to do a job when there is not an ounce of gratitude or respect given in return? It seems there will be a few changes coming to Heaven in 2011… I’ve been around for 18 years and I’m too old put up with this shit!
Until next time gorgeous!

  1. Hello Patron,

Being one of the people that run Heaven Social Dance, I would like to thank you for the feedback in your comment.

As Laydee has stated, the article that Bev and I wrote is limited in word count and expected to contain a variety of topics and information – not just Heaven. Of course in retrospect a number of the people you mentioned could have been thanked again.

It is fair to say that the night would not run without the support of our many patrons and The Northmead Bowling Club! For their support we are truly grateful.

Likewise with Tim and Mark from Acacia’s Catering – we are grateful for their support of the night and we try to give as much thanks to them as we can.

It seems that as Laydee mentioned you are not on our mailing list of Facebook – as everyone was thanked for their support of running the charity night the day following the event.

Putting on a charity night or bimonthly social dance (like Heaven) is hard work that is largely unpaid.

Most of us do it so that people in the community – such as yourself – have a GLBT friendly event out west to attend rather than having to travel into the city.

Your feedback is definitely valid – but acknowledging all the things that we did achieve that night would also be nice.

    Gracie Lou
    Co-Coordinator of Heaven Social Dance

  2. Dear Patron,

i am quite disturbed that you managed to find negativity in the above article.

The column above written by Beverly has to sum up a 2 months worth of gossip and activity in “Western Sydney”. She briefly sums up what has happened over the previous month as well as summarising what is happening in the month ahead. The column is not written purely as a Heaven column and therefore some information has to be kept brief.

If you are a regular fan of Heaven and are a fan on facebook or have joined the Heaven mailing list, you would know that each person you mentioned above was thanked via email. Also, if you attended the night, you would’ve heard Beverly thank all these people on the microphone.

A good deed kind of loses it’s appeal if the good deed doer needs constant praise for what they have done.

I am very close with Tim and Mark of Acacia’s Catering, and they are very aware of how appreciative we all are for there continual efforts and support for us. There logo is present on all Heaven posters, ad’s and website, and we at Heaven are always very thankful to them.

Northmead Bowling Club was sent a direct email of thanks and praise for all they do. Each dance, we have to rent the hall off the Club and due to the huge success of the Charity Night, they actually gave us the room rent free that night. Somehow, i don’t think that the Nortmead Bowling Club reads gay publications such as SSO and therefore it was a little unnessary to mention them yet again.

Danz Mobile DJ is also one of our favourite people, and yet again, we continually thank him for all his efforts and the wonderful job he does each dance. Each and every dance, including the Charity Night, Danz Mobile DJ is paid to do what he does for us. He always does a great job for us which is why his name is listed on all Heaven publicity material, and is also why we continually ask him to return as our DJ each dance.

The drag performers cannot “always devote their time” as you have mentioned. Behind the scenes, it’s a tough job organising it all and puts Bev and her volunteers through alot of stress. There were about 5 performers who volunteered their time and decided to pull out as paid work was made avbailable to them. The entertainers on the night kept the night free in their diaries to come and support the night, and some even changed their work schedules as to make time to appear, as well as others saying yes at last minute notice to fill vacant spots in the shows.
All the Queens made themselves very social on the night and made sure everyone was having a good time as well as some Queens working extra duties such as selling raffle tickets in order to make as much dollar$ as possible for the GLBT communities out west, taking out of their own social time on the night.

None of us at Heaven have ever forgotten our Patron’s either. We keep track of everyones views through comment cards, questionaires and by personally talking to our guests at each dance. WE continually are thinking of ways to improve the success and popularity of the night by taking into consideration all the opinions we receive.

Heaven is not a profitable organistaion and therefore our drive is not by dollar signs, however on a Charitable Event, it does come as quite a pleasing thing.

  3. Don’t forget the continious support from all the Patrons,
Sponsorship from Acacia’s, Music by Danz Mobile DJ, the
Heaven Volunteers and The Northmead Bowling Club for their
time and donations throughout the past, present and future
Heaven Social Dances and Charity Events.

The drag queens can alway “devote” their time,
but it’ll be lonely performing to an empty house.

Don’t forget the people too, instead of remembering the dollar$.

  4. You forgot to give thanks to all the continious support of the Patrons and Heaven volunteers that devote their time and donations at past and future Heaven Social Dance and charity events.

Without them, sure the drag queens can always “devote” their time to perform, but it’d be lonely.

Be grateful of the people too instead of just the number$…
