On the queen’s throne

On the queen’s throne

I have said it a million times and I’m sure many are sick to death of me saying it, but I love that our community is so diverse. The gay and lesbian communities umbrella covers so many different and fabulous people. At this time of year it seems that many of them start to come to the surface and we see spectacular performances sprouting up everywhere. (Though I wish we saw more threw out the year, rather than a concentration over the Mardi Gras period).

Not caring what brings these performances out, just happy to embrace them with open arms, I was lucky enough to be able to experience Quick and Dirty at the Performance Space at Carriage Works last Thursday night. I was warned from the start that some of the performances could be a little racy, but throwing caution to the wind, I was ready.

Unfortunately we arrived late, due to getting lost and walking around back lots and Redfern Station, like crazy people, but eventually making it, we were ushered into the theatre, to a naked man on a rug, I thought I was in heaven, this is the art I love to watch!!

Soon I realized the racy section had already started, as he pee’d into a bucket then drank a glass from the bucket, much like one of those water features you see in front yards. He then performed 2 amazing dance pieces, keep an open mind I thought to myself.

We slowly progressed from dance piece, monologues and spoken word, with the flash of boobs here and there to make sure we were paying attention.

We even had a fabulous tribute to Picnic at Hanging Rock that had the audience in stitches, and a gasp as our lead character ended up naked writhing around the stage floor.

As we gathered around at intermission, you could hear many, Oh what about when she did that or Fabulous as usual, I myself was a little too distracted as a veiled lady made a huge wall out of bread and jam, slowly creeping in to meet in the centre. Though her efforts slowed a little as audience members stole jammed bread and ate as they watched.

It was good to experience others thoughts, and performances, proving we are all individual and that standing out isn’t a bad thing at all, and more people should try it.

One performance had me a little confused but received a reaction, which ultimately is what we are after, was Adonis. She was a very Divine style character that came out dripping in a gorgeous cape, but soon was down to just cling wrap, and hidden surprises. By the end Adonis was rolling around in a pool filled with a deep red liquid, chewing on her surprises. I have no idea what she was getting at, but it stopped me to think, how many audience members have thought the same thing about me.

The Quick and Dirty is only on 3 days this Mardi Gras season but hopefully they will return for 2010. With so much crazy colour and movement, I will be sure to be visiting them again next season.

I had a fabulous night!!
