The Young Women’s Project double dares you

ACON’s Young Women’s Project is getting ready to put on its annual Mardi Gras arts event. In 2012 we’ve chosen the theme Dangerous Doubles — this could mean dead ringers, doppelgangers, drag pageantry or a chance to explore your alter ego.

We’re looking for young women to volunteer as organisers of this art exhibition and performance night. There will be loads to get involved in — promotion, design, engaging performers and artists, curating the exhibition, submitting your own artwork and much more.

Every year the Young Women’s Project invites young lesbians and same-sex attracted women aged 26 and under to spearhead their Mardi Gras event. We chose the theme Dangerous Doubles because historically representations of lesbian women in the media are as something criminal, deviant, monstrous and to be feared.

This fun event will seek to turn that notion on its head through parody and reclamation where the ‘dangerous’ will hopefully come to represent a fierceness and resilience that gives young women in our community a freedom to express their alter egos.

The Dangerous Doubles evening is a night to explore secret identities and gender-bending through performance and visual arts. It’s an all-ages, drug- and alcohol-free event.

If you want to get in early and mark your brand spanking new 2012 diary, Dangerous Doubles is on Friday, February 24 at Serial Space Gallery in Chippendale.

We double dare you to come along to our meetings and help organise the exhibition of Sydney’s most daring young artists. You could plan the pair-ilous performances or be involved in booking the dangerous DJ.
