Marriage equality battle needs your support

While the dual Buck$/Hen$ parties happening on Oxford St on Saturday September 23 promise a night of debauched fun, Australian Marriage Equality spokesman Alex Greenwich is keen to remind people they’re raising funds for a very serious issue.

“Following the parliamentary report-back a few weeks ago, one thing that was clear to me was that the other side [of the marriage debate] is very well-resourced, well-funded and prepared to take us on as best they can,” Greenwich told the Star Observer.

“Religious groups benefit from tax-exempt status, and people can make tax-free donations to charities and churches that may support their side of the cause — we don’t benefit from that at all.

“Australian Marriage Equality is run solely by volunteers. But we really do need funds to tackle the opponents with national TV print and radio campaigns, ongoing polling, getting people to Canberra, and education forums throughout the country. That’s where the funds will go.”

So head to Buck$ at Slide Bar for a male-oriented DJ and performance line-up, or cross the road to Q Bar for Hen$ Night, a female-focused party with DJs, burlesque and lap dancers.
