Volunteering is food for the soul

“Boredom is a choice, not a state of mind,” a wise person once said. So if you ‘feel’ bored in the gorgeous Northern Rivers the following suggestions may snap you out of your malaise.

Why not start by volunteering, food for the soul.

Tropical Fruits is totally dependent on volunteers to make their wonderful events a success. If volunteering some of your time for the largest GLBT social club appeals to you, call them on 6622 6440.

World AIDS Day is nearly upon us and is ACON’s busiest time of the year. Volunteers are integral to this day. Assisting with events, Red Ribbon selling and fundraising are all fun ways to make a difference and expand networks.

Registrations have opened for Treatments by the Sea, a popular and well regarded program for HIV+  people wanting to explore treatment and other health-related issues. To register, ring Neil on 6622 1555.

Roller Derby fever has hit the Northern Rivers. Women wanting to learn the ropes should come to Lismore Skating Rink on Thursdays 6pm-8pm in November. People who don’t relish the ‘argy bargy’ of Roller Derby, but still wish to skate and offer support to the team are also welcome. For details, email northernriversrollergirls@gmail.com

Meanwhile, back at the branch, we are supporting two research projects being conducted throughout NSW and Australia.

The first survey is the Regional Gay Community Periodic Survey. This survey has been collecting information in NSW for over ten years. The answers provided enable health and other organisations to respond appropriately to emerging issues for this group.

The second survey is conducted by the Aged Services Learning and Research Centre (Southern Cross University). Responses to this survey will inform decision-makers around GLBT end-of-life issues.

If you are interested in either survey, pop into our branch and pick one up, sit in our lounge with a coffee and complete it. We look forward to seeing you!

info: For information about groups, services, organisations or community events in the Northern Rivers, contact Sioux Harrison at ACON on 6622 1555 or sioux@acon.org.au.
Sioux is administration and volunteer officer for ACON Northern Rivers.
