Tennis Sydney digs deep

Tennis Sydney played its version of Wimbledon on the lawn courts at Marrickville on August 14. The day was a charity event for Tennis Sydney members, with a grand total of $1570 raised for Twenty10.

There was a raffle with some great prizes, and players baked cakes which led to some off-court rivalry about who was the best cook.

The club house at Marrickville Lawn Tennis created a great atmosphere with the bar popular later in the day with players who didn’t make the finals.

On court, players enjoyed the challenge of playing on real grass — for some, it was their first time playing on the grass surface. The divisions were named after famous women grass court players.

The winners of each division were: Graff Group: Russell Hall and Hayden Frawley; Navratilova Group: Tsukasa Ishida and Bryce Watana; Goolagong Group: Eric Finley and Stuart Rigg; and Williams Group: Tim Pailthorpe and Tim Gawler.

Tennis Sydney’s next event is the Peter Deacon Spring Tournament and entries close in September. It’s open to all players and caters for all grades.
