You gotta have pride

It’s officially Pride Week in Toronto, Canada, but here in Sydney it’s Pride Week every week, which turns to “shame” every time you look too closely at Taylor Square. But that’s a column for another week.

In all honesty there are always interesting things happening here in Queer Sydney, and this week it’s all about the final Loose Ends at the Phoenix. The season finale this Sunday night features all of the greatest Loose Ends hits of the last year from 10pm well into the night. It’s one of Sydney’s most interesting nights out so enjoy it like a motherfucker and fear not, promoter Matt Vaughan promises it will be back on the October long weekend after its winter hibernation.

Thursdays are another chance to dress up in your alternative best, with Glamour Pour Le Hammer upstairs at the Colombian. Resident DJ Jack Shit from FBi Radio and deranged club kid Faggot Rooster are joined tonight by DJ Tony Roma and gay rag hack/socialite of the Albury era, Lance Leopard, who is swooning on stage from 12.30am.

Then next Thursday 3 July, Melbourne’s Splatter Boy makes a special appearance in this little cavern of alternative/electro/glam culture.

Sunday nights are all about Gaze at Trademark, right under the Coke sign. Melbourne’s Nathan G rocked it last week, pushing his real house sound for all those quite literally in da house. DJs Alex Taylor, Kate Monroe, Jason Barry, Chip, Eddie Coulter and Sista P spin house each week from 5pm so there are no excuses for not going out for at least one $5 Long Island Tea. Entry is free.

Meanwhile, The Kings Cross Hotel across the road has finally reopened and if you’re looking for swank, then this is it, baby doll. Fingers crossed that the Rooftop becomes available for one-off parties again, but looking at the expensive fit-outs for the bars on the other floors, somehow I doubt they’re gonna want stinky sweaty clubbers stomping up those stairs like they did in the 90s.

Still in the Cross, and the Storrier Hotel has opened in Springfield Ave, a design haven which takes its cues from Australian artist Tim Storrier. There is a great rooftop bar atop the revamped art deco building so if it’s a view of the Harbour Bridge you want with your bevy, then book yourself and your loved one in for a night at this special little hotel.

Ahead to July, and Club Kooky makes its incense-perfumed return to Hermann’s Bar at Sydney Uni on 19 July, once Seymour returns from his overseas jaunt which sees him cutting it up in Iceland this week. The theme is Neon Winter Wonderland so it’s best that you dress like a snow man or an ice queen with lots of scarves, goggles, leg warmers and whatever else that people might be forced to wear in Melbourne.

Resident DJs Seymour and Gemma will be joined by Stereogamous (Seymour + Paul Mac = Stereogamous) and a live show by WOW. You can also catch WOW tonight (Thursday) at Levity Nights at the Hollywood Hotel and again tomorrow night (Friday) at the Bel Air Miami party at Candy’s Apartment.

Finally, thanks to all those who trundled down to Different Drummer last Friday night at the Mars Lounge despite the rain. We are working on our next party now which will feature Sydney’s self-confessed queen of eclectica, DJ Sveta, so the drums will keep on beating, you can be assured of that. Cheers, groovers, and see you next week.
