This week I found out that my most attractive friend, the one with the most killer mix of looks and personality, has been cheated on since a relationship started a year and a half ago. So I’m gonna tell him about Pope Alice’s queer kiss-off at Taylor Square at 3pm Saturday 19 July, where he can pucker up with a beautiful stranger for a good cause.
The kiss-off during World Youth Day will show that Sydneysiders support HIV/AIDS prevention and homosexuality, unlike the Catholic Church.
Kiss-off organiser Pope Alice, a.k.a. Brisbane performance artist Luke Roberts, is also a key player in the NoToPope coalition which will rally in Taylor Square from midday the same day before marching down to the Randwick Racecourse to discuss homosexuality and condoms with the Catholic youth.
For a taste of what we’re in for, check out Pope Alice’s deliciously bizarre promo vid on YouTube by searching “Pope Alice Kiss In”. It will mess with your mind.
From NoToPope to No More POPE, Planning Minister Frank Sartor has proven that the developers haven’t bulldozed the last of his brain like an old terrace, with some of the more stubborn points of NSW’s horrendous POPE (Place of Public Entertainment) licence being killed off last week.
Coming into effect in spring thanks to Sartor and Co, live performances (including music, comedy and theatre) can return to Sydney’s halls, hotels, restaurants, cafés and even churches without their owners having to cough up ridiculously high licensing fees for the privilege.
Of course, Sydney’s new liquor act came into effect on Tuesday too which means it will now be a hell of a lot cheaper for small businesses to get a licence to serve alcohol. So this is goodbye to the old “intention to dine” restriction from another era when people had to be force-fed to avoid drinking-related trouble, and hello to a much more civilised drinking culture.
The lobby group Raise The Bar celebrated their victory with a party in Cunningham St in the city, with live music from the Ray Mann Three, on Tuesday night.
Everyone was toasting the beginning of this great new era for Sydney and they’re waiting with bated breath for new bars to open.
I’ll be interviewing Clover Moore on these pages very soon to ask the veteran groover why she took up this issue in parliament with her Small Bars and Restaurants Bill. Clover Moore, not less! Love-her Moore, etc.
Out on the strip the most exciting thing for the chaps this week is the opening of Handle Bar at disco dungeon Gilligans on Saturday night, the new night that features that Tom of Finland-style graphic (it looks like a real one but I can’t be too sure).
Opening night DJs include Lovertits, Mark Murphy, A-cYbele, Tam, Matt Vaughan and Neonhearts performing live, and they’ve locked in Seymour Butz, Sveta, Lovertits, Johnny Pash and Vinyl Richie for future Saturday nights.
The opening night of Bitch Revolution at the Oxford Art Factory on Saturday will be the mega chick magnet, especially because DJ Sveta is back from New York and it’s Sista P’s last Aussie gig before she heads to the UK. They’ll be joined by Beatrix, Renae Stanton, Cyndi Tan, Kyla Sexton, MC and Rosa plus over eight live performers. It looks set to be a big night! Doncha wish you were a girl sometimes?
Watch out for Copper Lilly opening soon on the third and fourth floors of the Kings X Hotel, and new mixed event Alibi coming up at Mr Mary’s on Saturday 12 July. Alibi will feature DJs Stephen Allkins, Jimmi James, Dean Dixon, Jamie Lloyd, Dave Fernandes and Long John Saliva on a disco, house, techno and soul trip.
That’s all from me, so have a great weekend and here’s hoping that some of us find true love or something resembling it out there on the planks this week. If not, I might just see you at the kiss-off. It’s for a good cause, after all.

Clover is an absolute doll. Where would we be without her?
