Dirty dancing between the sheets?

The Kiss-In? Well, frankly I was underwhelmed, what with all of the necks craning around looking at what everyone else was doing, and the general look and feel being that of a Socialist Alliance conference. Now there’s nothing wrong with having a conscience, but isn’t there a way to make it a little sexy? Carrie Bradshaw wouldn’t have stayed, and so neither did I.

What is sexy is a rumour about a gay celeb. A little birdie told me Rhys Borbidge is up for a hosting role on the next series of So You Think You Can Dance. The birdie also squeaked that two of the dancers from SYTYCD might be sleeping with the same guy — also an entertainer on the Sydney planks. Does it get any better than having a dancer in your ear telling you the hot goss straight from Walsh Bay? No, I didn’t think so either.

On to dancing of a different nature — Fag Tag is having its fourth birthday celebrations at the Water Bar on the Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf this Sunday 27 July from 4pm. The first UK Fag Tag party went off with a bang in London two Sundays ago, with a few hundred people turning up, about three quarters of whom were Aussie expats. Fag Tag is now in Sydney, London, Auckland and Melbourne, and the Perth division is opening up soon.

It’s Lovertit’s Birthday Bash at Handle Bar this Saturday night, and down at the Phoenix it’s the Underbear party. The theme is “Rucked — Underground Underbear” — which sounds like a footy shorts party in anyone’s language. With DJs Seymour Butz and Baby Bear skimping on clothes but not on tunes it’s gonna be packed in a grand final style.

The Taylor Square Hotel had its PoPE (Place of Public Entertainment) application refused by the City of Sydney due to its “long history of nuisance and disturbance”. It seems that the “numerous police arrests, noise and security disturbances and ambulance call-outs” have come back to bite T2, along with the “unsociable behaviour of patrons and staff”.

Madonna critic Sam Sparro didn’t disappoint at the Oxford Art Factory last week, or so I am told because I, along with the rest of the dumber half of fagdom, didn’t get a ticket. The next hot Aussie expat worth checking out as she dumps off the cultural conveyor belt is Pip Brown, aka Ladyhawke. She is headlining Modular’s new Club Mod Party at the Forum on Saturday 16 August, alongside Van She and Tame Impala. Ladyhawke appears on Pnau’s new single Embrace and frankly she rocks.

Bada Bing is on this Saturday night at the Flinders Hotel, a night of urban sounds for girls, produced by Bitch. DJs Sveta, Renae Stanton and Mr Flynn will be accompanied by vocalist Charmaine, MC Sammy G and a live performance by Rosa & Co in a night of hip hop, soul, R&B and hip-house for those who like it with a black attitude.

And lastly, being around so many enlightened homos at the Kiss-In last weekend had me thinking about the deeper stuff. Like, can you still call Taylor Square “Gilligans Island” even though it doesn’t have palm trees anymore? I’m stumped (as were the unfortunate trees) so if you have more of a clue on this or any of the other riddles in O.D. go online at http://www.starobserver.com.au/tag/observation-deck and tell me all about it. And bring back the palm trees, y’all.
