The cast for the Australian stage version of Hairspray was announced in Melbourne this morning, and as predicted by Rita La Coque Eater in her Southern Star column a couple of weeks back, Sydney drag diva Trevor Ashley has taken out the prized role of Edna Turnblad. The role was made famous by drag legend Divine in the original 1988 John Waters film.

As expected, the central role of Tracy Turnblad went to a newcomer – Morwell-born 22-year-old Jaz Flowers, landing her first lead role in a stage production. Supporting cast members announced today include prolific theatre actors Grant Piro and Marney McQueen.

Hairspray opens at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre on October 2, with further seasons in other Australian cities still to be announced. info:
