Capsis tips cap to starman

The second annual Ziggy David Bowie tribute concert is less than two months away, but as cast member Paul Capsis sheepishly admitted to the Star Observer, he didn’t have a clue what was planned for the event. The perpetually in-demand Capsis will barely have time to rehearse for the concert in between seasons of Threepenny Opera in Sydney and Die Wintereisse in Queensland.

“Bad habit. Old habit. It’s what comes when you spend years wondering when the next job’s going to come,” he chuckled. Capsis joins fellow newbie Christa Hughes on the bill for the October 14 concert, alongside Jeff Duff and Steve Balbi, who helped get the inaugural event off the ground.

While he was yet to figure out which of Bowie’s hits he’d sing, he was adamant about one thing: he wouldn’t be attempting any sort of Bowie impersonation.

“I want to do them in my own way – I’m not interested in trying to do an impression of Bowie. It’s a celebration of his music and perhaps some of his fashion, but I’m going to give that Bowie flavour while still doing what I do.”

Surprisingly, given Capsis’ own androgynous stage presence, he said it wasn’t until relatively recently that he’d found himself influenced by Bowie.

“It was only 10 years ago that I really rediscovered him, relistened to the early stuff, and realised the guy was a leader in bringing androgyny and theatricality to rock music.”
