Finding time lost

Finding time lost

The Wonderful World of Dissocia tells the story of a woman who lost an hour of her life travelling between time zones.
Antony Neilson’s fascinating play uncovers this lively trip, buried deep within the mind of protagonist Lisa.
In order to regain balance in her life, she has to travel to a land called Dissocia to recover her hour, director Marion Potts told Sydney Star Observer.
The audience is taken on this quest and experiences with her an array of people and events.
The play opened at the Sydney Theatre Company last Tuesday night, and features Kate Box, Justine Clarke, Matt Day, Michelle Doake, Russell Dykstra, Justin Smith, Matthew Whittet and the very sexy Socratis Otto.
The Wonderful World of Dissocia was commissioned by the Edinburgh International Festival and went on to win every major category at the Critics’ Awards for Theatre in Scotland including Best New Play. In 2007, the National Theatre of Scotland’s production delighted audiences and critics alike across the UK.
Neilson wrote the play as a way to investigate uncharted psychological territory.
If you like Alice in Wonderland but there’s not enough sex and violence in it, then Dissocia is the show for you, Neilson said of his work.
Through her quest to find that missing hour Lisa becomes transfixed in a topsy-turvy world where she meets a number of eccentric characters.
These include a bumbling pair of (in)security guards, a (scape)goat with a penchant for committing horrible crimes and a trashy hot dog vendor named Britney.
But the trouble these guys cause is nothing compared with Lisa’s most terrifying adversary: the Black Dog King.
In many ways the characters are all aspects of Lisa’s own character. They are refracted through her perception of herself, Potts said.
The play gives great licence to actors who have rich imaginations of their own and who bring to the floor the most extraordinary range of ideas and choices. But these of course have to be harnessed and given an internal logic -” however lateral.
