Freemasons ready to party

It’s not their first time at the Mardi Gras party and this year the Freemasons will revisit that once a year night of camp, glitter and dancing at the Entertainment Quarter.

Known for their signature uplifting and sing-along tunes, the boys (Russell Small and James Wiltshire) said that they can’t wait for the hoedown on Saturday 7 March.

We are very excited about Mardi Gras. It’s been up there with our favourite gigs since the last time we played. We know we will have a great time, Small said.

We will be making a whole series of bootlegs and re-edits of our own tracks and those of others -” we’ll probably be still doing this on the plane over. It’s very exciting being digital DJs these days as laptops and CDs give you much more freedom and keep everything exciting.

Named after the Brighton, UK pub, the duo won the hearts of clubland thanks to a remix of the popular Jackie Moore tune Love On My Mind.

Remixes are the Freemasons’ best friends. Their radio edit of Beyonce and Shakira’s Beautiful Liar supplanted the album version in the UK which ensured the single held the top spot for several weeks.

With the assistance of songwriter Biff Stannard, the boys did their first co-production with the one and only Kylie. The electro-pop tune The One made the final playlist for her
platinum-selling album X.

We co-produced and co-wrote the track, but like always we never got to meet her. The other producers recorded the vocal. What we were hoping to achieve was a classic Kylie track, something that would stand out on her album. I think we did that, Small said.

If you miss out on the Mardi Gras party, don’t stress because the Freemasons will hold a one-off showcase at the Metro with support act Katherine Ellis on Saturday 21 March.

Our sets change from gig to gig. The Metro gig will probably feature more of other people’s tracks mixed in with our own, Small said.

Katherine is the most energetic diva out there. She puts everything into her performances, she always lifts the crowd when she supports us. Her songs have inspired us over the years.
