Grouse Nita to get a little Sissy

With Mardi Gras just around the corner, it is hardly surprising Australia is about to burst at the seams with international DJs.

One of New York’s finest, DJ Nita, is among those winging their way to our shores to play at some of our best-known establishments.

DJ Nita’s sound is well-known, having helped transform New York’s East Village Opaline Area into the ultimate dance party location at the turn of this century.

And we’ll get our taste very soon when he plays Melbourne’s Grouse Party on February 10, and Sissy in Sydney the next night.

“My style comes straight from the New York City underground house scene where it’s grown to mesh with new sounds from all over the globe,” the handsome deck spinner told the Star Observer.

“It’s a beatdown for sure, I draw on a lot of different genres for inspiration … but when you get right down to it, it’s house music all night long.”

DJ Nita mastered his beats at Kevin Aviance’s Legendary House of Aviance, a popular New York-based gay performing group established in the late ’80s.

Performing on three decks, Nita’s promoters describe his style as “dense, house-inflected epics that display the attention span of a hummingbird with ADHD”.

A professional DJ and performer for more than 10 years, Nita said there had been many highlights in his career to date.

“Recently I had the opportunity to remix two songs from Beyonce’s latest album, 4 — Countdown and End Of Time,” he said. “Countdown went on to hit number one on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart.”

And while mixing tracks for one of the world’s most talented performers may be hard to top, Nita is bouncing off the walls at the prospect of a visit to Australia.

“I’ll definitely be bringing my signature Nita tracks, my favourite classics and a whole bunch of new sounds that are killing the floors in NYC,” he said.

“It’s always interesting travelling, but I’ve found that ass-shakin rhythms transcend borders.

“Aside from playing my gigs, which is always the most exciting part of any trip, I’m really excited to catch up with friends, soak up a bit of summer — ‘Child, it is cold in NYC right now’ — and get in the studio with DJ Sveta and make some beats.”

INFO: DJ Nita will be joined by DJ Sveta at Grouse on February 10 at Melbourne’s Roxanne Parlour before heading to Sydney to play Goodgodsmallclub on February 11. Tickets on the door at both venues.
