Queer content awards nod

The Green Room Awards Association announced the nominations for their 2010 awards for excellence on the Melbourne stage last week, with many queer-tinged productions up for gongs.

The annual Green Room Awards go to professional performing artists in theatre, musical theatre, cabaret, opera and dance.

Among those nominated is Sarah Ward’s Yana Alana and the Paranas in Concert for Best Production, Ensemble and Original Songs categories, and drag performer Kaye Sera for Contribution to Cabaret.

The Boy From Oz picked up six nominations and Hairspray nine in the musical theatre category, while Rafael Bonachela’s we unfold took out six nominations in dance.

The newly appointed president of the Green Room Awards Association, Richard Watts, said the event celebrates the strength and vitality of Melbourne’s performing arts sector and the remarkable range of works seen on Melbourne stages.

“It’s a rare and important opportunity to recognise the achievements of the talented individuals and companies responsible for maintaining Melbourne’s reputation as a centre of excellence in the arts,” he said.

The Green Room Association members — directors, playwrights, choreographers, performers and critics — decide the nominations and awards. The members are organised into panels in each discipline.

The recipients will be announced on Monday, March 21 at a gala ceremony in Melbourne’s Famous Spiegeltent, in the forecourt of the Arts Centre.
