Stonewall documentary screens on SBS

SBS One will look at events that sparked the global gay rights movement next week, screening The Stonewall Uprising on March 15.

The documentary takes a definitive look at the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York City speaking to those who witnessed it, including drag queens, police detectives, journalists, and a former mayor of New York.

At a time homosexuality was illegal and seen as a mental illness in the US, The Stonewall Uprising uses archival footage to chart the historic event which saw police raid the Stonewall Inn and patrons fight back. The ensuing violence and street protests resonated around the world and the gay rights movement was born.

The Stonewall Uprising screens on SBS One on Tuesday, March 15 at 10.10pm
