Vibrant queer nightlife of London captured in photography exhibition

FROM trans people to fetishists, London’s most colourful nightlife characters will featured in an upcoming photographic exhibition at The Lock-Up in Newcastle, NSW.

Night Flowers features a series of over 40 images taken by London-based Australian photographer Damien Frost, which were taken as incidental portraits following chance encounters outside clubs — many of which have an LGBT clientele — or in neon-lit alleys.

The still quality of the images shadows the fact they were taken on the streets of London with curious, and sometimes hostile, revellers passing by.

The portraits also capture the transformative effects of the subject’s intricate and painstakingly applied make-up and costumes, and their unapologetic self-expression.

Frost’s method of capturing these images is recorded in a mini-documentary commissioned as part of the exhibition.

As well as the launch of the exhibition, Frost will also release a book called Night Flowers, which includes a foreword by Boy George.

The exhibition will be held at the Lock-Up in Newcastle from February 5 to March 13. Visit thelockup.org.au for details.
