SBS Dateline report to look at China’s gay shock therapy practices

SBS’ flagship current affairs program Dateline will air a special report tonight on the practice of drug and electric shock therapy culture in Chinese hospitals that claims to “cure” homosexuality.

Reporter Shaunagh Connaire met with activists in China who are calling for the end of the controversial practice, yet fear prosecution from the police who monitor their every move.

It has been 15 years since China stopped classifying homosexuality as a mental illness, yet doctors still suggest nausea-inducing drugs and electric shock therapy as a treatment to avoid “homosexual urges”.

Dateline airs tonight on SBS from 9.30pm
