The Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service (GLCS) is launching a new social group for the LGBTI community.

Anyone over 18 is welcome. Admission is a gold coin donation to cover costs.

GLCS co-president Jamie Rullis said Social Saturdays was a new initiative from the free telephone counselling service, giving people an alternative to bars and clubs.

“So much of the social interaction in our community is centred on going to pubs or clubs and other alcohol-focused environments,” Rullis said.

“GLCS saw the need for a social option for the broader LGBT community, to encourage interaction … across a diverse range of people who might otherwise never get to meet in a social environment.”

Organised by trained GLCS volunteers, each Social Saturday will be centred around a theme, and will be held on the third Saturday of the month.

Hosted at the GLCS’ Newtown headquarters, the first Social Saturday is on November 19 from 4.30pm and is themed ‘Let the Games Begin!’ Attendees can expect fun, socialising and board games. Light snacks and drinks will be provided.

The following Social Saturday is a Christmas cheer-themed session on December 17.
