Sydney Gay Games holds 10-year reunion

The Sydney 2002 Gay Games is holding a 10-year reunion this weekend. LGBTI athletes who participated and sporting enthusiasts that spectated in the 2002 games are invited to attend the event which will be held upstairs at the Beresford Hotel in Surry Hills, Sydney this Sunday. Team Sydney acting CEO Ian Wilby said the idea for the reunion had not been planned and was actually quite a recent idea.

“It was something that came out of the woodwork about three weeks ago,” he told the Star Observer.

“It’s probably right that somebody should remember it because I think it’s something that would slip below the horizon for a lot of people otherwise.

“In talking to people that where there at the time, and were part of the movers and shakers, even for them it had slipped below the horizon so it was very proper.”

Wilby said Team Sydney now boasted 500 members which reflected the popularity of the Gay Games in the Australian LGBTI community.

“Over the years there were many [involved]. Australians were at the first Gay Games in 1982 and Australia, and especially Team Sydney, has grown each time there has been a games,” he said.

The next Gay Games is being held in 2014 in the US city of Cleveland, Ohio.

Sunday’s reunion is open to athletes, cast and crew-members, supporters, partners and friends. Athletes and performers are asked to wear their uniforms and costumes and to bring any medals. There will be a sausage sizzle as well as memorabilia from the games on display.

INFO: Sydney Gay Games 10-Year Reunion is on Sunday, November 4, 2pm–6pm at level one Beresford Hotel, Surry Hills.
