Australian documentary Gayby Baby to have world premiere in Toronto
A NEW Australian documentary looking into the world of “gaybies” — the children of gay parents — will premiere next month at Toronto’s Hot Docs Film Festival.
Gayby Baby takes viewers into the homes of four kids – Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham – who share their trials of growing up, albeit with two mums, or two dads.
Director Maya Newell, herself a “gayby”, has said she made the film because she wanted to see honest representations of rainbow families.
“I really hope that people stop talking about same-sex families and their children and start listening to them,” she said.
The feature-length documentary grew from Growing Up Gayby, a short documentary by Newell that aired on SBS in 2013.
The film’s Pozible campaign raised over $118,000 in 2012 with almost 1244 backers all eager to support the project through to fruition.
Visit the website here for updates on when Australian audiences can see the film. In the meantime, here’s the trailer:
This is a new presentation of the material – a feature length doco, the previous one had a different slant, and was cut for TV.
This from 2012. The funding goal was reached by the way. :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LTTPv_ObiY
This is not a new documentary. It is actually about 4 years old. We are friends with one of the families featured. One of our daughters makes an appearance towards the end because she is a close friend of Ebony’s.Exceptional documentary nonetheless. It used to be freely available to view on Youtube. Highly recommended. 5 stars.
