A NEW Australian documentary looking into the world of “gaybies” — the children of gay parents — will premiere next month at Toronto’s Hot Docs Film Festival.

Gayby Baby takes viewers into the homes of four kids – Gus, Ebony, Matt and Graham – who share their trials of growing up, albeit with two mums, or two dads.

Director Maya Newell, herself a “gayby”, has said she made the film because she wanted to see honest representations of rainbow families.

“I really hope that people stop talking about same-sex families and their children and start listening to them,” she said.

The feature-length documentary grew from Growing Up Gayby, a short documentary by Newell that aired on SBS in 2013.

The film’s Pozible campaign raised over $118,000 in 2012 with almost 1244 backers all eager to support the project through to fruition.

  1. This is not a new documentary. It is actually about 4 years old. We are friends with one of the families featured. One of our daughters makes an appearance towards the end because she is a close friend of Ebony’s.Exceptional documentary nonetheless. It used to be freely available to view on Youtube. Highly recommended. 5 stars.
