Brisbane’s Big Gay Day returns

Brisbane’s Big Gay Day returns

Eleven years on and still going strong, Brisbane’s Big Gay Day is back on Sunday, March 13, with some amazing guest DJs and live performers who will whip the 5000-plus-strong crowd into a big gay frenzy.

If ever there was a time to heard north for a weekend, this is it. Your visit will help inject much needed funds into the city’s water-logged economy. And if you are heading to a post-Mardi Gras recovery, well it is on your way home anyway, so you may as well stop in.

The day will be emceed by Meshel Laurie with her ever-present wit, along with co-hosts and drag legends Miss Synthetique and Trixie O.
Meshel is not only a perennial radio favourite but has also been donating her time to the Equal Love movement and has emceed the Brisbane rallies in support of same-sex marriage.

Very special guest DJs on the main stage include Paul Goodyear (USA), Ruby and Oxford Hustlers. Local favourites will be pumping the Wickham Bar: Les Smith, Matt Steer, Coxy, ACraig, Ish and new addition Jimmy Z (4PLAY). The upstairs bar will be back in action this year, going back to its roots as a Gay Day haven for the alternative.

“Who is on the main stage this year?” has been the cry of many patrons of the Wickham over the last few weeks. Although there is still a secret or two left you can definitely bet on the fact that Mega Drag will be back in all its glitter and glory. Rarely do most of Brisbane’s showgirls come together without a nail being embedded in someone’s cheek but this is the one event that gets them all dancing in sync, with the result being one Mega Drag show.

American dance icon Ultra Naté, whose chart-topping singles Show Me and Free launched her 20-year career at the forefront of electronic music, will be just one of the stellar performers on the Main Stage.

Joining her will be local legends Potbelleez and we are sure that when they shout Are You Ready to Go every person watching will be on their feet with anticipation of a cracker of a performance.

As indicated earlier, there will be more exciting announcements as the organisers aim to outdo themselves for yet another fantastic event.

Gates open at noon, Sunday, March 13. Tickets are available on the door for $35. As usual, 25 percent of all door tickets go to the nominated charities of Open Doors, GLWA, and PFLAG Brisbane. With over $180,000 raised to date, the goal for this year is to smash the $200,000 mark.
