Ferris joins Masters Games

Gay cycling legend and two-time Olympic medallist Michelle Ferris has been named as an ambassador for the world’s largest multi-sport event to be held in Sydney later this year.

Running 10-18 October, the 2009 World Masters Games will see 25,000 people from more than 100 countries compete at 72 Sydney venues, including many former Olympic sites.

The Games program is made up of 28 sports, including diving, water polo, weightlifting and, of course, cycling.

Entry is open to anyone who meets their sport’s minimum age requirement, ranging between 25 and 35 years, with the majority open to people aged 30-plus.

The emphasis is on participation and health rather than athletic prowess.

It doesn’t matter how good or old you are, everyone’s invited to take part, organising committee spokesman Shane O’Leary said.

The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games are all about being fit, fun and forever young.

After coming second in both the 1000m sprint at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and the 500m time trial in Sydney four years later, Michelle Ferris will fasten her helmet once again to compete in the 2009 World Masters Games’ road cycling events.

The sprint star is no stranger to promoting sports events, having been named last year as an ambassador for the next Gay Games to be held in Cologne, Germany in 2010.

The Sydney 2009 World Masters Games appeal to me because they’re a chance for sportspeople of all ages and abilities from around the globe to come together in an Olympic city to celebrate their love of sport and passion for life, Ferris said.

Joining the list of Games ambassadors are Olympic champions Lord Sebastian Coe, Murray Rose and Daniel Kowalski.
