Kaine makes a splash

Matt Kaine, a member of Sydney Underwater Bushwalking Society (SUBS), has been elected to the board of Diving for Life (DFL), a US organisation that raises money for gay and lesbian health charities.
“I was invited to put forward a request to join the board. Each year one or two members of the board step down and I’ve been elected for two years,” Kaine said. “There’s one other non-American on the board, a woman from the UK.”
Formed in 1993 and following the traditions of DFL, SUBS has donated over $20,000 to various Australian charities.
“DFL stipulates that the donations go to GLBT health-related charities.  We have donated our dividends to BGF here in Sydney due to the work they do supporting people with HIV,” Kaine said.
“We’ve also supported HIV charities in Fiji and Thailand to give back to the communities where we have so much fun at DFL events. The group in Fiji is very hard done by and grateful for every cent we have been able to give them.”
Mainly a social diving group for gay men and lesbians, SUBS has two dives coming up. The first is on Sunday, November 8 at Shelley Beach, Manly and the second is at Bare Island, La Perouse on Sunday, November 29.
