Bashir opens Newtown centre

Governor of NSW Professor Marie Bashir (pictured left), officially opened the new premises shared by the Gay And Lesbian Counselling Service (GLCS) and Twenty10 on Saturday. Bashir, the patron of the GLCS, thanked volunteers who spent the last 12 months renovating the two-storey building on Bedford Street, Newtown, and said she was proud to be associated with both community organisations. The recent addition of a separate lesbian counselling line at the GLCS is a very, very important -“ and I believe essential -“ service, she said. And another very impressive development, which warmed my heart I must say, is the completion of the training of 25 additional counsellors, which should provide even speedier access to anyone seeking assistance. Bashir said she admired Twenty10 for working so hard to prevent young gay and lesbian people from becoming homeless and assisting them to restore family relationships.
