Call to write to MPs on adoption

Readers have been asked not to let the federal election overshadow the importance of ensuring Sydney MP Clover Moore’s same-sex adoption bill is passed in NSW.

On August 18, Labor MLC Penny Sharpe posted on Facebook that state MPs had received 28 emails against same-sex adoption but none in favour.

“If you support the best interests of all children in NSW now is the time to let your MP know that you want them to support same-sex adoption,” Sharpe wrote. “If you’re in NSW, please let your voice be heard.”

Sharpe told Sydney Star Observer a few days later that, based on what she had received, those numbers were evening out.

“It’s pretty even at the moment,” Sharpe said. “I’ve had around 30 against and around 30 in favour but there are more coming in all the time.”

Sharpe said the heat surrounding the federal election might have distracted some people from the upcoming vote on the bill.

“I think people have been focused on the federal election, but the adoption bill will be coming before the parliament in the next month or so and as people start to focus on that, the campaign will start to ramp up — and that has now started to happen.

“All MPs have a conscience vote on the same-sex adoption bill. If people have a view and want that to be passed, they need to get in contact with their local MP and urge them to support this bill that’s in the best interest of kids.”

GLRL policy coordinator Senthorun Raj reiterated the importance of reform.

“Adoption reform will end the last piece of direct legislative discrimination against same-sex couples in NSW,” Raj told Sydney Star Observer.

“Contact your local MP to demand they support the Adoption Amendment (Same-Sex Couples) Bill, which, if passed, will end this unfair discrimination.

“Visit www.glrl.org.au to take immediate action on adoption reform.”

In related news City of Sydney councillors have voted unanimously on a motion calling on NSW parliamentarians to support same-sex couples being able to adopt.

The motion was introduced by Deputy Lord Mayor Phillip Black and seconded by Liberal councillor Shayne Mallard.

  1. Anglicare wants children to be forced to grow up in their institutions. They prefer this to a loving home.

As far as I am concerned they have broken the law writing to members of parliament advocating a political position. The tax office should remove the tax exemption Anglicare has.

Anglicare should not be allowed to continue to abuse children by placing them in their institutions when all the research shows that is the last place a child should be placed.

Saying they will withdraw all fostering services if they do not get their own way is also child abuse. The funding Anglicare got was to provide a safe and stable environment. Telling the child you will kick them out on the street if a politician does not discriminate is sickening.

Anglicare abuses children. No doubt about it. They are the last people you want in charge of children.

  2. Clover Moore thank you for introducing this long-overdue private members bill to the House, adoption for same sex couples is NOT controversial. All citizens want all children to be protected and loved – what better way to do that then to allow a loving couple, regardless of their gender to provide the love and support a child needs in this world!!!!

There was a proposal way back in 1997 to allow adoption by de facto same sex couples by the way and the Government have been “stuffing-around” on the issue for years – only because it is seen as 3 things “we will lose votes at the next election if we pass this law”, “too hard” or “too controversial”!!!!

The evidence is crystal clear and in black and white to show that when children are loved by same sex couples, they benefit in many ways socially, economically and spiritually in all areas of their life!!!

To the bigots (e.g. ACL and FF) you will not win with your lies and spin!!!

    * FF – Family First

  3. I hope this bill passes both houses and gets assented into law. In 1984 gay male sex was made legal under Neville Wran under a conscientious vote and also the 2003 age of consent equalisation was also a conscientious vote. If the Bill fails the conscientious vote, I will organise a lawful protest in fount of the NSW parliament House.

“Hey hey ho ho the discrimination has got to go, hey hey ho ho the discrimination has got to go!!!!!!!!”

Also the Surrogacy Bill will soon be introduced to NSW parliament to allow the “transfer of parentage” to commissioning parents that will also allow gay men to become fathers – just like the recent surrogacy laws in Queensland!!!!!

  4. As a gay man and a father of 3 beautiful children it annoys and saddens me to think that there are still people within our community that think that there would be some sort of down-side for a child being adopted and raised by a same sex couple. The church based groups such as Anglicare that believe that a child MUST have a mother and a father in order to grow up properly are living in the dark ages.
A child should be raised in a home where there is love, where they are safe from harm, where they are given every opportunity to get a good education and there are plenty of same sex couples that are able to offer this by way of adoption. Their sexual preference has absolutely NO bearing on their ability to do this.
When there are so many children in our society who are living in homes where the are being neglected, mentally, physically and sexually abused by their natural parents it is immoral NOT to allow same sex couples the chance to adopt and give these children the love and care they deserve.
I shall be writing to my local member thats for sure.

  5. Writing writing writing like crazy here. This will make such a huge difference to our children and to all those children already in ss families, especially older foster children who are permanently in ss families .

Please support this and write to NSW ministers.
