Campbell back on the front line

Campbell back on the front line

A month after stepping down as transport minister and being outed by a Channel Seven camera crew, NSW MP David Campbell has a new role in Parliament, while his popularity in his electorate remains strong.

Campbell was picked by Independent MP Richard Torbay, who is Speaker in the Legislative Assembly, to be acting Speaker while he is on leave. Torbay told Sydney Star Observer he retained confidence in Campbell’s abilities and was proud to offer him the role, which is unpaid.

Meanwhile the Illawarra Mercury has published the result of a poll of 300 voters in Campbell’s South Coast seat of Keira.

The poll, taken after Campbell was outed, found only one in five voters were now less likely to vote for him. Another one in five said they were more likely to vote for him and 55 percent said their vote remained unchanged.

  1. He isn’t an outstanding politician but loved the camera so he is quite well known. He went there in a government car. What was the man thinking? he chose to be a politician and he chose to have a family and he likes the lads too.

I think it was someone at Kings that probably called the press. I don’t have too much sympathy for the guy But his sons and wife are a different matter. Poor people must have mortified. To see your dad on television walking out of a gay club would be shattering. Don’t you think that there is a bit of miss placed sympathy here.

    The man is a fool.

  2. I’m just happy it’s Channel Seven that had to go on the defensive and hopefully think twice about pulling a stunt like that again.

One point re: Myfanwe – politiicans can use their cars to go gay saunas or the beach or libraries or whatever. It is within the rules. Maybe the rules are too lenient but David Campbell didn’t break any law regarding the use of a government car.

  3. “…and 55 percent said their vote remained unchanged.”

So basically, the general public couldn’t give a damn whether he’s gay or not. Maybe they should be focusing on whether he’s a good MP or not.

  4. Whether he identifies as gay or bi is really not that important. I’m glad that he has not been vilified by the public for his orientation. Using a government funded car for his outing was a bit of a blue, but nothing else about it is so terrible.

  5. So was he outed for being Gay or Bi? Really the man does have kids,so wouldn’t he be considered as Bi?
Also the media outlets that reported this story quoted “He a male sauna used by Homosexuals” Seriously if they did their research, these places are full of Bi-Sexual “Happily Married” Men who frequent these places, not just gay men, thanks for reading

  6. This is progress of sorts. Not that long ago, an authority figure like Campbell would have disappeared in disgrace or killed himself (remember Justice David Yeldham?).

He still could lose his job but that would be to do with anti-ALP sentiment rather than anti-gay attitudes.
