Greek Adonises get set to party again

It’s that time of year again when the Greek LGBTI community comes together for one of its popular social nights, Club Adonis.

Open to anyone of a Greek background and for those who “love all things Greek” the event offers a welcome antidote to just another evening spent at a typical gay bar, said organisers.

Club Adonis committee member Paul Peroy said the group was started to provide a forum for LGBTI people with a Greek background and offers something different to the generic gay club scene.

“It was to create a social group for LGBTI people in the queer Greek community to get together,” Peroy told the Star Observer.

“Basically the Greeks felt the need to celebrate their culture in a gay environment.

“Everyone that’s on the committee is either born in Greece or of Greek heritage.”

The last party in May was a big success with hundreds of people partying all night long and raising thousands for LGBTI youth charity Twenty10.

Peroy said the reviews were great and this party to be held at the downstairs of the Imperial Hotel in Erskineville is “bigger and better” and expected to outdo all previous events.

“It’s the first time we have had entertainment and the venue has agreed to stay open till 6am,” he said.

Peroy said Adonis had been running for the last decade but that it was really in the last few years that it had started to take its present shape.

“Adonis Informally started some years ago and in 2005 they formalised it and created a committee and started holding things like dinners and event nights,” he said.

“The first few were a bit quieter; now it’s about 500 people who come along.

“It’s just an opportunity for people to have a night out and have a different feel of music and a different style, it’s a mix of pop and Greek tunes.

“There’s also that element of an exotic feel.”

This weekend’s event will host four DJs including Peter Gallo and DJ Georgio as well as a Greek-inspired drag show.

“We’ve got a Greek show with Pandora Box and it’s the first time we’ve had a show, it should be pretty high camp,” Peroy said.
