Honour Awards nominations open

The GLBTI community in NSW has been urged to nominate individuals and organisations whose work or achievements deserve recognition at the annual ACON Honour Awards.

Now in its fifth year, the gala fundraising event for ACON gives community members an opportunity to pay tribute to those making a difference in the lives of others.

“We all hear lots of wonderful and moving stories of how people from all walks of life are helping or inspiring others in our community and that’s what we want to celebrate through the Honour Awards,” ACON CEO Nicolas Parkhill said.

“We’re inviting community members to nominate people or organisations they feel have provided leadership or achieved outstanding success within the GLBT community or have provided excellent service or made a significant contribution to the GLBT community.”

Nominations can be submitted in the business, health, education, community, legal, political, media and cultural categories through the Honour Awards website.

This year the awards are partnering with the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Business Association, the Star Observer, Foxtel, Merivale and 360 Management, and will be presented at The Ivy on Thursday, September 29.

Community elders Sue Wills and Lex Watson were joint winners of last year’s Community Hero Award for a lifetime of law reform advocacy beginning with their election as co-presidents of the Campaign Against Moral persecution in 1972.

“These awards are important, as we must honour our own and recognise our own before anyone else will,” Wills said.
