Queer film lovers await Pell

Will he or won’t he? Cardinal George Pell has been invited to attend this Sunday’s screening of In Good Conscience, a documentary about American lesbian nun Jeannine Gramick.

Pell has been asked to speak at the post-film forum by his cousin, former nun Monica Hingston, who famously challenged his views on homosexuality in an open letter last year.

Since my letter was published in January, I have heard from so many people who have suffered enormous anguish and pain for so many years over rejection from their families or church, Hingston said. This anguish is about an innate desire that we all have to be accepted by our families.

Hingston and her partner of 19 years, Peg Moran, led this year’s Mardi Gras parade.

The forum will feature leading figures in the gay Catholic community.

The film and forum are the closing event on the queerDOC calendar and will be held at the Valhalla Cinema, Glebe at 7pm on Sunday 12 September. At time of press tickets were still available. Visit www.queerscreen.com.au for details.
