Sydney’s GLBTI to dig deep for QLD

Sydney performer Catherine Alcorn – popular amongst Sydney’s queer audiences for her sell-out one woman Bette Midler tribute show, The Divine Miss Bette – has announced plans to stage an all-star benefit concert for victims of the

Queensland flood disaster. Alcorn sent an email to industry friends last week to gauge interest in participating in an event, and awoke the next morning to a flurry of interest in the proposal.

“It’s gone viral overnight. It’s turning into quite a musical theatre industry event, which is fabulous,” she told the Star Observer at the time.

The benefit, called Flood Light, will take place at Slide Bar on Sunday January 23 from 5pm and feature performances from DJ Alex Taylor and Deni Hines, Bob Downe, Barry Crocker, Timomatic, Bobby Fox, Lucy Durack, David Harris, Marika Aubury, Amelia Cormack, Andy Conaghan, Flip Simmons, Lucy Maunder, Belinda Wollaston, Nadia Coote, Erin Kennedy, Verushka Darling, The Fabulous Chandeliers and many more.

Prizes at a raffle and silent auction will include goods and services from Hamilton Island, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Daniel Mostyn Hair, Denson Baker A.C.S Photography, Mardi Gras 2011 and more. Entry is by a $20 minimum donation on the door.

And Flood Light isn’t the only flood relief effort happening on the Oxford St strip – the nearby Gotham Bar will donate $1 from every drink sold on Friday January 21 to the Premier’s Relief Fund, while SSO Media, publishers of the Sydney Star Observer and Melbourne’s Southern Star Observer, was one of the first organisations to offer its services.

“Our community is well known for its ability to pull together in a time of crisis and our brothers and sisters in QLD need our help now, more than ever,” publisher Scott Abrahams said.

“It is imperative we all pull together and do what we can to raise the money our friends north of the border will need not only for the clean-up, but to pull their lives back together.”

SSO Media has also pledged 10 percent of revenue from this week’s Star Observers to the cause after an SOS from its sister publication in QLD, QNews.

  2. Couldn’t agree with you more Scott- we except other communities to support our cause then we should do the same in return.
Those affected by the floods need our help, not because we are gay or maybe have higher disposable incomes, but bevausebwe are compassionate and thoughtful and care about others
I encourage everyone to dig deep
