Tasmania seeks inclusion
GLBTI Tasmanians have until June 12 to let the Tasmanian Government know how to make the state more inclusive.
The Tasmanian Gay and Lesbian Rights Group has welcomed a call from the state Government to seek the community’s views on the state’s Social Inclusion Strategy.
“This is an excellent opportunity for us to remind the Government that there is still serious prejudice and discrimination in parts of Tasmanian society and that the resources put into addressing these problems are woefully inadequate,” TGLRG spokeswoman Jen Van-Achteren said.
“Until recently, Tasmania was renowned for excluding LGBTI people. The test of how inclusive Tasmania can become is how inclusive it is of its LGBTI citizens.”
The Government has set up an online survey so GLBTI people can provide feedback on the strategy or ideas on how the Government can better include the GLBTI community.
Public consultations were held recently in Burnie, Launceston, Hobart and Huonville.
According to the TGLRG, a number of issues were raised, including providing diversity training for public servants, developing community education campaigns and improving support for GLBTI students.
