A space for change

National youth mental health body Headspace took a stand against homophobia this week.
Headspace CEO Chris Tanti said it was “no longer okay” not to address the problem of statistically higher rates of poor mental health in same-sex attracted and gender questioning youth.
“We know young people who are same-sex attracted or uncertain about their gender identity are at higher risk of experiencing mental health concerns due to the difficulties associated with disclosure and community attitudes,” Tanti said.
Tanti’s comments were made on May 17, International Day Against Homophobia.
Headspace will launch a campaign in coming weeks to raise awareness among parents and carers of issues affecting same-sex attracted and gender questioning young people.
