Help Haiti’s gays

The leader of Haiti’s largest HIV service for men who have sex with men, has sent an impassioned plea for help to the world’s gay and lesbian community.
Among the approximate 200,000 killed in last week’s devastating earthquakes were a number of workers and members from SEROvie, Haiti’s main support group for local MSM and transgender community.
Group leader Steve La Guerre managed to issue a message to the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (IGLHRC) asking for assistance.
“We were having our usual support group meeting on a quiet Tuesday afternoon when the worst happened,” La Guerre wrote.
“The sound is unforgettable. I can’t even describe the horror as the ceiling and the wall of the conference room started to fall and the chaos started.”
Fourteen men were killed. Only two people from the group survived.
“It is now more than ever that SEROvie and ACCV (Civic Action Against HIV) are needed, to provide the quality services we provide to our beneficiaries: food, clothes, and any type of help,” he continued.
IGLHRC have begun collecting donations to provide assistance to these groups and another feminist organisation Colectiva Mujer y Salud who have crossed over from Dominico to offer victim relief.
Executive Directo of IGLHRC Cary Alan Johnson called on the GLBT community to, “support the courageous and necessary relief work being done to help the people of Haiti, regardless of where you donate your money, supplies or time.”
