Local waterhole celebrates a milestone

DT’s hotel in Richmond celebrates its 14th birthday this week, with special events at the venue over the next few days.

Vickie Vegas delivers her highly acclaimed Liza Minnelli show tonight (June 11), while Dulcie Du Jour stars in a special birthday show on Saturday June 13. For bar manager Bruce McKenzie, who has been with the hotel since day one, this week is also a time to reflect on how far the venue has come.

-œFourteen years… in some ways it seems like a long time, but in other ways it seems to have gone by so quickly. DT’s is a teenager now, he joked to Southern Star.

-œSome of the people I first served when they were 18 or 19 are now grown up and heading into their mid-30s, and I’ve been able to watch them grow the whole way. Over the years, it’s the people who have been incredible -” so many people have popped in for a chat and a beer at one stage or another.

The birthday also coincides with a change in ownership, with Rob Buck recently buying the hotel. McKenzie said Buck was committed to maintaining the friendly, community atmosphere that DT’s patrons so enjoy.

-œRob wants to keep the pub going in the same way it has for the past 14 years, but at the same time, having a new owner freshens things up a bit.

-œIt’s a bit of a rebirth for DT’s, but we’ll still always be a friendly place where people from every colour of the rainbow can come and have a drink.
