Making the smart choice for sexy summer swimwear

Making the smart choice for sexy summer swimwear

-œIt looks tiny, I heard a muscle-bound queen declare a few weeks ago as he paraded his potential buy for a female friend at the local swimwear boutique. While trying to avoid eye contact, she replied, -œNo, you look big in that pair, the boys are going to love it.

Picking the right swimsuit -” be you poof or dyke -” is a tricky business.

For every person who considers a swimsuit little more than a practical item of clothing to wear to the beach or pool, there’s at least one who will put the fashion above the practicality, insisting it’s the best way to attract a mate when the sun is shining.

While we’ve been hibernating, Mr and Ms Fashion-Conscious have been tanning and reading Vogue to ensure their swimsuit for the 2008/09 summer is the swishest and best fit possible.

Melbourne-based swimwear brand Flamingo Sands has its eyes out for the girls, with the latest collection inspired by long, hot, balmy summer days, with a nod to having fun with your friends.

-œSummer is always about bright colours, bold prints and being slightly more daring than one would be in the cooler months with your wardrobe choices, said Nicky Rowsell.

-œSwimwear styling has changed slightly this year in that cut-out swimsuits have been toned down in favour of the one-piece that offers more coverage and not crazy tan lines.

-œFabrics are also becoming more detailed with a lot more options for someone who might like to wear something with more support to hold in or hide those problem areas. For the shopper who wants something a bit different, there are also more players in the swim market than ever before.

The Flamingo Sands designs are aimed at the confident and sassy woman, who likes to stand out from the crowd while making a fashion statement.

-œWe spend a lot of time developing our own unique fabric prints each year that definitely have a certain brand signature and look, she said.

-œThere are so many great swim styles and cover ups available for most body shapes these days. What I picked up from my trip to Brazil is that it’s all about attitude. Not every woman in Brazil is fortunate enough to look like Giselle, but they definitely love the beach lifestyle and love wearing the skimpiest bikinis possible no matter what their body shape -” and they look great.

It’s seems the boys are fluffing it up and embracing the ball-bulging materials of the Speedo and Swimbriefs. AussieBum are hoping to bring sexy apparel into their latest collection.

-œWe’re bringing more sex appeal and if this isn’t enough a piece of -˜candy’ onlookers will remember in a positive way when heading home from the beach, said aussieBum’s owner and founder, Sean Ashby.

-œClassic, bold, dynamic, sexy and masculine are the choice words for aussieBum. One of the other key signatures is we consider every asset a man has. So when designing new swimwear styles we ensure a man’s best assets are presented in the most favourable way.

So does that mean we can look bigger when emerging from the cold water?

-œYou bet! The Boosterjock in our swimwear range is a huge hit (literally), he said.

-œNo one likes to look like a girl coming out of the water. This is all in the design of the garment so there are no rings, strings or padding. It’s 100 percent naturally you.

-œThe person who created this [Guyon Holland, aussieBum partner] always had an issue about leaving the water. This problem has now been overcome with the invention of the Boosterjock.

There some basic rules all beachgoers must remember. The first rule is to contrast your swimwear with your skin tones. If you have dark skin, try wearing a lighter colour swimwear and if you have light skin, wear a darker colour.

-œIf you’re carrying a few extra Big Macs then I suggest plain colours or dark body fitting styles, Ashby said.

-œIf you have a more square hip, I suggest the European style or if you’ve got the sporting style look, then go for it. Make the most of it and live every guy’s fantasy.

-œAlways remember lighter colour swimwear will be sheer to some degree. Never forget this when exiting the water and more importantly if the water is really cold.

-œWhen exiting the water always remember to suck the lower gut in. If James Bond can do it, then so can we.

-œA swimwear tan is still the sexiest image that is a tradition in the Australian lifestyle and culture. So if you’re a fake tan person, take this into account. Don’t pull your swimwear up. It should be a straight line across the waistline.

The worst thing to happen is for your swimmers to fall apart. I’ve turned mine rainbow-coloured from colour washing and even shrunk them in the dryer.

-œIt’s important to wash your swimwear by hand in warm soapy water as soon as you get home from the beach or pool, Ashby said.

-œDon’t leave it in a plastic bag and don’t let it get hot in the sun. Let the garment dry naturally in shade and you will have swimwear that should last quite a long time.

While it’s essential to wear the right swimwear, it’s vital to have the right accessories such the Santa Monica beach chair and sun umbrella. Accessory beach brand Suboo’s latest collection is bold, bright and beautifully designed

-œEach design has been inspired by its aptly named exotic location and brings an element of luxury and the feeling of an escape to a faraway destination -” not your everyday hardware store beach umbrella experience, said Suboo designer Sue Di Chio.

-œSuboo celebrates our love of summer and our obsession with the great outdoors. Now you can enjoy our beautiful beaches under the shade of a stylish umbrella that speaks volumes about your design aesthetic and personality.

With tips from these renowned designers, you can look and feel wonderful in your latest buy this summer but for the sake of the retail assistant please don’t parade around and ask if your genitals look big in this.
