Saying gay is OK

Saying gay is OK

There were some quizzical looks and some equally enthusiastic participants in the International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) campaign last Friday.

Hitting the city’s lunchtime crowds, a group of volunteers led the charge in convincing passers-by to have their picture taken with a message opposing homophobic violence and prejudice scrawled on bright cards.

IDAHO was marked around the world last Sunday, May 17, the anniversary of the World Health Organisation removing homosexuality from its list of mental diseases in 1990.

Those who stopped were generally young groups of schoolfriends happy to get behind the campaign.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said no to homophobia, holding up a sign for photographers stating -œEveryone welcome, everyone safe, everyone equal in Melbourne.

By 2pm, placards were mounting on the footpath, informing the city crowds that homophobia is still a problem.

On hand were organisers Greg Adkins from the Anti-Violence Project, Sgt Scott Davis from Victoria Police and volunteers from the ALSO Foundation, along with many other helping hands.

Mayor Doyle joined Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Simon Overland and Victorian Governor Prof David de Kretsa in speaking out against homophobic violence for IDAHO this year.
