Optus says ‘yes’ It Gets Better

Australian telecommunications giant Optus has uploaded a staff video contribution to the It Gets Better project onto the official Optus YouTube channel.

In the video a group of around 20 openly gay and lesbian Optus staff tell personal stories about coming to terms with their sexuality, their coming out experiences, and that things do get better in adult life.

And one of the faces in the video will be particularly familiar to Star Observer readers – Harbour City Bears president Jonny Bastin, who often writes the Bearly Speaking online column for the Star Observer and who works as a business analyst for Optus.

In the video, in which snippets from the 20 staff members are interweaved with each other, Jonny says, “I even remember saying to myself, ‘well you cant be gay because you like football’,” in speaking about first coming to terms with his sexuality.

Later in the video he talks about the sense of belonging he found when he found the LGBTI community.

“Being gay was quite exciting as an 18-year-old,” Bastin says.

“I found it really exciting. This is where I belonged this is what I wanted to find out everything about.”
