Peru’s gay Oscar shot

A film about a closeted gay fisherman searching for the body of his dead lover has been chosen by Peru as its entry in the 83rd Academy Awards.

Homosexuality is not illegal in the socially conservative Andean nation, however, as recently as 2009 gays were banned from serving in its police and military forces.

Undertow has already won the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival, boosting its chance of receiving an Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category.

Last year when The Milk of Sorrow, another Peruvian film, received an Oscar nomination the movie was broadcast on national TV before the Oscars broadcast, with a public screening in the square in front of the Governmental Palace in Lima.
