Separated by degree

Adelaidians are separated by a single degree, my brother informs me. Hollywood suggests Adam and Steve are separated by just six degrees.
Social scientists present a great case for a midpoint, about three or four people separating humankind into the people you know or who know you through someone else.
In a crowded space, it may be argued that there are times when it is best to be the attraction in the centre of it all.
Have you wandered into a large dance party to meet ‘friends’ there? Is this actually possible, to simply wander into a crowd of 10,000 and walk directly into the group you are seeking? Researchers suggest it is easier to locate an individual who is placed centrally in this situation.
Is there any benefit to the centre of attraction in this setting? If a violent incident breaks out when a hairstyle is damaged accidentally on the perimeter, the safest place to be is in the middle of the crowd. The personality thriving in this setting has his/her exuberant behaviour reinforced through blissful ignorance of the danger to one’s hairstyle on the crowd’s perimeter.
If, however, an incident occurs — a hissy fit amongst a gaggle of girls — within the milling crowd, the timid or fringe dweller is able to flee safely, while Attraction Man is caught up in the fray.
The discussion changes dramatically with the addition of external forces. Should a fire break out, the fringe is the best place to be. With equipment failure, or an explosion, those located closest are most likely affected.
When our community rages against sporting behaviours, how one is affected by the actions, the day-to-day training or game play as a participant rather than a social commentator is dependent on one’s position in the team or the club. Our position is a reflection of how comfortable we are being ourselves.
