Spike in volleyball interest

Gay and gay-friendly volleyball players from around the country converged on Sydney at the weekend for the annual Freezone Volleyball tournament, which was only topped by a stunning victory for Freezone at the Sydney Championships on the following day.

The weekend was a hit for Freezone in more ways than one, with the annual Freezone tournament going off smoothly on Saturday followed by a much celebrated victory for Freezone’s Kaiata Navy team, who took out the Sydney Championship in division two on Sunday.

The battle for gold between Kaiata and Trinity was an undeniable highlight of the season with the two teams seesawing through five gruelling sets. Trinity took the first set, but it was Kaiata who took the last at 15-8 and, in doing so, took home the gold.

After a day of sweating and bare-toothed competition, victors and losers alike were able to come together for a picnic at Centennial Park where tactics and next weekend’s women’s semi-finals were discussed.

Freezone’s women’s Kaiata Lime team will play in those finals and are hotly tipped to win.
